Notes on my obsession with Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai by Yoneda Kou. Twittering Birds Never Fly is a manga series serialized in the Japanese manga magazine, ihr HertZ, since August 2011.

There are still new chapters coming out at present, and the material is is being adapted as a trilogy of anime films.

As I write this (early October 2021), I found this story about three months ago during an ongoing deep anime dive. it is the first time I backtracked to find a manga, and in doing so fell down a deep rabbit hole with this story.  I’ve read everything in English like ten times twenty times already.

It’s easy to consume in one way, but agonising in another. Like some of the best romance novels I’ve read to date (specifically Susan Johnson), the plot is built on real emotions, fraught situations, buried trauma and how unselfish love (and a very good fucking) can help you heal.

The book blurb for Vol 1 reads:

Yashiro is the young leader of Shinseikai and the president of the Shinseikai Enterprise, but like so many powerful men, he leads a double life as a deviant and a masochist. Chikara Doumeki comes to work as a bodyguard for him and, although Yashiro had decided that he would never lay a hand on his own men, he finds there’s something about Doumeki that he can’t resist. Yashiro makes advances toward Doumeki, but Doumeki has mysterious reasons for denying.

Yashiro, who abuses his power just to abuse himself, and Doumeki, who faithfully obeys his every command, begin the tumultuous affair of two men with songs in their hearts and no wings to fly.

Except, this is really the worst book blurb ever and does the story an injustice.

I tried to keep it as a delicious personal secret, but it is impossible not to read this story and reflect.

These posts, are not really for my general readership. They are for the Saezuru fandom. So it will be very hard for my regular folks to understand what the fuck I’m talking about. I can recommend that you actually read the series, but I’m not going to be explaining a whole lot to folks outside the fandom here.

CW: The content in these posts, and that covered by these posts, is rated NSFW, NC+17, and covers rape, child sexual abuse and sexual violence.
