Welcome Back V… Let’s have a look atcha!

Although I know many of you within Barbados (possibly the Caribbean) and who are slaves to C&W cannot access this content, I still want to share it with you. Anyone watch this one as a child? My brother and I were g.l.u.e.d. to the TV on Saturday afternoons, engrossed in this story (told cheesily, I admit) and I still remember the plot (if not all the details) very well. Fascinating that this show is being revived…

As a side note: Can I just say, that any reason whatsoever to see more Morris Chestnut on my screen is a good reason. From first time, to last time, I think that man is just delicious to the eye.

The Aborigines Say We Dreamed The Universe Into Existence

tucknpattidreamThis album, “Dream” by Tuck and Patti, I found on sale at No. 1 Record Shop, Independence Square in Barbados, for some stupid money–like less than $10DBS. I was 17 years old, and a rabid consumer of new-to-me music. I was still finding my tastes where music was concerned, and although much had already been set in stone, I was still wide open to everything I heard.

I plunked down the stupid money, took it home, and fell in love with it. It is one of those albums I consider seminal in my own personal development, and this album never, ever, ever fails to rejuvenate my spirit.

Tuck’s inimitable guitar-playing style, Patti’s rich like Bailey’s voice, and their unbelievable lyrical content, makes this among the albums I have 1) never lost or misplaced in 18 years 2) one of my all time favourite collections.

Video & lyrics under the cut.

Musicmobs Make Over To The Tenth Power

Cherish The Day — Sadelove sexy
I woke up this morning, synced my stats for musicmobs and “Command +V” and nearly fell off my chair!

Musicmobs just exploded into a completely revamped look. Now it looks more like last.fm, and has more similar features.

All of a sudden, while getting infinitely more clickable, and easier to navigate, musicmobs which was cool, got a whole lot cooler!

I love the new playlist features, and my goodness, being able to publish them so easily is going to get addictive for me.

I’ve already published my MAMMOTH “Baby Making Music”, and it’s playable, downloadable, commentable, ratable! HA! I am totally loving this.

You know I am true blue dyed in the wool card carrying dues paying music geek, so between the new last.fm and the new musicmobs, that’s it for me…. forget all the others, these two sites are the absolute best for music pigs I’ve seen to date.

One thing I never was too keen on is the way musicmobs pulls in album art. There are far too many blank boxes in my profile, and I think there should be an option to upload album art!

The integration with iTunes is relatively seamless with both sites, and they both feature interesting ways to discover and fall in love with new music. I love it! (Love them, actually!)

Oh I am pig happy in mud this morning, but have to rush off to an interview, so will have to save my deep down playing until I get home tonight.

Breadfruit Oil-Down

Breadfruit Oil-Down

INGREDIENTS:

  • ½ pound smoked ham, diced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, minced
  • 2 seasoning peppers (or substitute 2 Yellow Wax Hots), seeds and stems removed, chopped fine
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ½ Congo pepper (Habanero), seeds and stem removed
  • 1 bunch green onions, chopped fine including the tops
  • 2 teaspoons fresh minced thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 4 cups Coconut Milk
  • 1 large breadfruit, peeled and cut into 8 sections (or substitute canned breadfruit)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD:

Place the ham in a saucepan, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, until the ham is tender, skimming off any foam that rises. Drain the ham and set it aside.
Heat the oil and sauté the onions, peppers, garlic, Congo pepper, green onions, and thyme for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the coconut milk, heat, and then add the breadfruit sections, the ham, and salt and pepper.
Simmer, covered, for about 30 minutes, or until the breadfruit has absorbed all the coconut milk. Serve hot.

My Ten Shows

  1. Star Trek: Voyager – I always liked that this show always began with a twist… at least most of the time. I think it was best during it’s second, third and fourth seasons and then kind of tapered off. All the same, I adore Janeaway’s character and I really dug the story. My brother and I were addicted to that show. Ai, ya! A job under my belt, DVD boxset in ya ass!
  2. X-Files – Another series I always found watchable. Truth is, some of the episodes creeped me out, but some of them were so clever it was mesmerising.
  3. Dr. Who (Tom Baker) – This was the afternoon MUST BE IN FRONT THE TV AFTER SCHOOL addiction for me and my brother. I think it’s as camp as all hell now, shucks I thought it was camp then, but campy goodness, oh yes! Loved it!!
  4. Twin Peaks – Sunday nights for the whole series, on CBC…. couldn’t miss a single episode!Still want to re-watch it, because I only ever saw it the once on television. Kyle McLachlan was just a joy to watch….
  5. My So-Called Life – Despite it’s brief one season on television, I really dug this show. Maybe it was the point I was at in my life (although I was in my early twenties) I really identified with Angela. Her dramas were like what I went through at that age, and Claire Danes impressed the hell out of me. She channeled that character.
  6. Babylon 5 – To be honest, it took me a while to get into this show. This was mostly because Deep Space Nine was on at the time, and you know I really have a crush on Avery Brooks (such a handsome man :sigh:). But then Deep Space Nine started to bore me, and Babylon 5 started to interest me, and lickety split I was hooked… deep.
  7. Dead Like Me — What a inky comedy about death. Mandy Patinkin was great as the crusty ass hardballed death dude. I laughed my ass off, and TV rarely makes me do that.
  8. 6 Feet Under — Equally great show about death, but not quite as supernatural. Very funny, with some brilliant performances. The writing on this show is also quite good.
  9. Carnivale — More weird twin-peak-esque goodness. This show I did not get to watch every episode.. but of what I saw, I was really into. HBO isn’t really in the UK from what I’ve seen. Neither Sky or Homechoice carry it, and well, I miss it. I really do. God bless DVD boxsets and multi-region DVD players.
  10. nip/tuck — this is my guilty admittance. Not the type of show with characters I would normally find interesting, but somehow it proved to be just that. Even Joely Richardson’s pinched nose, put on American accent and dispproportionately large eyeballs could not distract me from that tan and bright white teeth! I liked the writing too.

Gallileo’s Head Was On A Block

All truths are easy to understand
once they are discovered;
the point is to discover them.

– Galileo Galilei

Galileo
Indigo Girls, words and music Emily Saliers.

Galileo’s head was on the block
the crime was looking up for truth
and as the bombshells of my daily fears explode
I try to trace them to my youth

And then you had to bring up reincarnation
over a couple of beers the other night
and now I’m serving time for mistakes
made by another in another lifetime

How long till my soul gets it right
can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo
king of night vision, king of insight

And then I think about my fear of motion
which I never could explain
some other fool across the ocean years ago
must have crashed his little airplane

How long till my soul gets it right
can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo
king of night vision, king of insight

I’m not making a joke, you know me
I take everything so seriously
if we wait for the time till all souls get it right
then at least I know there’ll be no nuclear annihilation
in my lifetime I’m still not right

I offer thanks to those before me
that’s all I’ve got to say
’cause maybe you squandered big bucks in your lifetime
now I have to pay
but then again it feels like some sort of inspiration
to let the next life off the hook
but she’ll say “look what I had to overcome from my last life
I think I’ll write a book”

How long till my soul gets it right
can any human being ever reach the highest light
except for Galileo God rest his soul
(except for the resting soul of Galileo)
king of night vision, king of insight

How long
(till my soul gets it right)
[til we reach the highest light]
how long
(till my soul gets it right)
[til we reach the highest light]
how long

Empire Strikes Back is best SW film: official

Empire Strikes Back

It’s like I’ve always said… now I can argue with impunity and evidence when this perennial discussion starts up with my brother.

Return of the Jedi what?!!

Empire Strikes Back is best SW film: official

By Lester Haines

Published Thursday 28th April 2005 10:33 GMT

The 1980 Star Wars outing The Empire Strikes Back has been voted best of the series in a poll of 40,000 UK film buffs carried out by magazine Empire.

Han Solo secured top hero spot, while – surprise, surprise – Darth Vader was the readers’ fave baddie. R2D2 was crowned top droid and Chewbacca can now prouly declare himself most-favoured alien.

That The Empire Strikes Back topped the poll comes as no surprise to those who like their films with a bit of character development and plot. It beat Star Wars: A New Hope (aka Star Wars to anyone over 40) into second place. Further evidence of the superiority of the original trilogy comes with the news that Return Of The Jedi secured third spot on the podium.

This, however, is as good as it gets. Lamentably, Empire readers then voted Revenge Of The Sith their fourth favourite – even though the bloody film hasn’t been released yet. Quite how this works we have no idea.

Orishas – Discovering Cubano Hip Hop

Last Friday as I was riding the bullet (the fast train) to work, I was flipping through a copy of the Metro, the free newspaper distributed at all the train stations in London.

In the entertainment pages was a spread on this Cuban rap group called Orishas.

Of course, I read every word of the article, absorbed by the review/preview; they were performing in London this weekend. I am now seriously disappointed that I didn’t know in advance, since I have rampaged through the iTunes Music Store, and now find myself enthralled with this unique music.

In the Metro article they’re described as:

“And so the disparate sounds of these separate cultures, in these alchemists’ hands, turn into something that sounds natural and organic, something that works in front of Latino, hip hop, pop or rock audiences and that serves as a vehicle for their pointed social commentaries.”
I have kind of backward engineered my now passionate attraction to this music. I read about their London gig in the Metro, then as I was searching the iTunes music store (and Kazaa) for Orisha music, their stuff just started coming up. So after two days of buying and downloadings, I have fallen in love with their sound, their flow, their musicality.

Death To IE6!

“IE6 is the new Netscape 4. The hacks needed to support IE6 are increasingly viewed as excess freight. Like Netscape 4 in 2000, IE6 is perceived to be holding back the web.”
